Bank of Montreal (or BMO Financial Group) is the fourth biggest bank in Canada and the eighth largest bank in North America by total assets. The company is based in Quebec and operates through three key business lines: Personal & Commercial Banking, BMO Wealth Management and BMO Capital Markets. The Group's offerings are chequing and savings accounts, personal and business loans, credit and debit cards, mortgages, lines of credit, financial planning, investments, insurance, travel services, foreign exchange, mobile and online banking and more. With 13 million personal and commercial customers across North America, BMO employs over 53,000 people and maintains a network of approximately 1,860 branches and 5,770 ATMs. The company has strong market positions in the US where it operates as BMO Harris Bank. BMO has been ranked as one of the most reputable financial organizations among U.S. banks according to American Banker and the Reputation Institute’s customer surveys. In 2009, BMO Financial Group acquired the Diners Club North American franchise from Citibank. This deal gives exclusive rights to issue Diners Club cards to corporate customers in North America. In 2014, BMO purchased F&C Asset Management plc, a diversified UK investment manager with 150 year history. As of October 31, 2024, Bank of Montreal reported total assets of C$1.4 trillion, total deposits of C$982 billion and gross loans of C$683 billion including C$191 billion in residential mortgages. The company’s shares are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), with a market capitalization of US$73 billion as of February 10, 2025. BMO was named Best Commercial Bank in Canada by World Finance Magazine. It is also one of the four safest banks in North America along with RBC, TD and Scotiabank, according to Global Finance. Established in November 1817, Bank of Montreal is the oldest bank in Canada.
