There are approximately 5,900 insurance companies in the United States including about 2,500 property/casualty insurers and 1,750 life/health insurers. The companies generated more than $1.2 trillion of net premiums written in the last year. Prudential Financial Inc (NYSE: PRU), headquartered in Newark, New Jersey, is the largest insurance company in the United States with $874 billion in assets, $1.38 trillion in funds under management, $4 trillion of gross life insurance in force and over 50,000 employees. It is also the second largest U.S. insurer by net premiums written. It offers a wide array of products and services including term life and universal life insurance, variable and fixed annuities as well as pension, retirement and investment products. Metlife, based in New York City, is the second-largest insurance company in the country by assets and the largest by direct premiums. In 2018, it generated total revenue of $68 billion including $44 billion in premiums. As of June 17, 2019, it had a market capitalization of $46 billion.
