The Colombian banking sector consists of 25 banks with about 5,700 branches and 16,000 ATMs across the country. The top three banks are Bancolombia, Banco de Bogota and Davivienda. Banco de la República, established in 1923, is the central bank of Colombia responsible for monetary policy and foreign exchange. Bancolombia

Bancolombia S.A., headquartered in Medellin, is the largest bank in Colombia by assets. It serves over 30 million retail, commercial and corporate customers through about 850 branches and 6,120 ATMs in Colombia, Latin America and the Caribbean region including Panama, Salvador, Guatemala, Cayman Islands, Peru and Puerto Rico. It offers savings and checking accounts, personal and auto loans, mortgages, microcredits, debit and credit cards, investment and offshore banking, brokerage, pensions, insurance, mobile and online banking and more.

Banco de Bogota

Banco de Bogotá S.A. is the second largest bank in Colombia in terms of total assets. It has subsidiaries in Panama and the Bahamas as well as agencies in New York and Miami, Florida (USA). Established in 1870, the company is the oldest banking institution in the country. It is the best bank in Colombia according to Global Finance magazine. Banco de Bogota is a subsidiary of Grupo Aval Acciones y Valores, which is owned by Luis Carlos Sarmiento, Colombia's richest man.

Banco Davivienda

Banco Davivienda S.A. is the third largest bank and one of the five most valuable brands in Colombia, with about 660 branch offices, 2,800 ATMs, 17,300 employees and 24 million clients. It is also the number one financial institution in terms of advertising recall. The company offers personal and business loans, various deposit products, credit and debit cards, insurance and investment products, transaction and treasury services, foreign exchange, wire transfers and much more.

BBVA Colombia

BBVA Colombia S.A., headquartered in Bogota, is a private banking institution operating through about 390 branches, 1,480 ATMs, mortgage centers, agencies and cash extensions in over 130 cities across the country. The company was founded in 1956 and currently employs around 5,400 people. As of June 30, 2024, BBVA Colombia had consolidated assets of COP 105 trillion (US$25 billion) and gross loan portfolio of US$18.6 billion including US$3.7 billion in mortgages. The company is a subsidiary of Spanish BBVA Group. It is the safest bank in Colombia according to Global Finance and the best private bank in Colombia according to The Banker (2024).

Banco Popular S.A. (Banco Popular Colombia), founded in 1950, provides personal and corporate banking services through about 180 branches and 690 ATMs. Banco Popular operates as a subsidiary of Grupo Aval Acciones Y Valores.

Banco de Occidente

Banco de Occidente S.A., headquartered in Santiago de Cali, is the sixth largest Colombian bank. It provides a wide range of banking products and services through a nework of around 175 branches and 270 ATMs in Colombia as well as subsidiaries in Panama and Barbados. It has long-term and short-term ratings of BB+ and B, respectively, from Fitch. With 6,700 employees, Banco de Occident operates as a subsidiary of Grupo Aval.

Banco GNB Sudameris

Banco GNB Sudameris S.A. is the seventh largest bank in Colombia by assets size, with 295,000 local customers, 80 branches and 1,500 domestic employees. It also has 10 branches in Peru and 21 branches in Paraguay. The company focuses on retail and SME banking services. Banco GNB Sudameris is the fourth largest payroll lender in the Colombian banking system.

Scotiabank Colpatria

Scotiabank Colpatria S.A. is the eighth largest banking group in the country by assets and deposits. It provides banking services to retail and business customers through a network of about 170 branches and 380 ATMs in 39 cities across the country. The company operates as a subsidiary of Canadian Scotiabank. In 2018, Scotiabank acquired retail, credit cards and SME operations of Citibank in Colombia. In January 2025, Scotiabank signed an agreement to sell its operations in Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama to Banco Davivienda.

Itau Colombia

Itaú Colombia S.A. (formerly Itaú CorpBanca Colombia) is one of the major banks in Colombia, with gross loans market share of 3.0%. It serves 347,000 customers through 64 branches and 116 ATMs. It also has subsidiary in Panama. The company employs about 2,100 people and is part of Itaú Unibanco Group, the largest bank in Brazil and Latin America.
