The American Express Company or Amex (NYSE: AXP), headquartered in lower Manhattan, New York, is a global payment company offering a wide array of charge and credit cards, prepaid cards, business cards, gift cards, local currency corporate cards and non-card payment solutions. It also offers merchant and travel-related services to individuals, small and mid-sized companies and large corporations in over 100 countries and territories. American Express is number one in customer satisfaction among credit card companies in the U.S., Hong Kong and Singapore according to JD Power credit card satisfaction study. Amex is well known for its Gold, Platinum and Green charge cards. It is the world’s fourth largest card network by number of cards in circulation as well as the 4th largest general-purpose card network in terms of purchase volume after China UnionPay, Visa and MasterCard, according to company’s annual report. Currently, American Express has around 146 million cards in force of which 83 million are proprietary cards, while 63 million cards are issued by third parties. As of September 30, 2024, the company reported $271 billion in total assets, $135 billion in customer deposits and $129 billion in card member loans. The common shares of American Express are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and trade under the ticker symbol AXP, with a market capitalization of $214 billion as of November 27, 2024. The company was founded in 1850 and today employs over 74,000 people.
