List of Banks in Malaysia
The banking system in Malaysia includes commercial banks, investment banks and Islamic financial institutions. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is the country’s central bank acting as the regulator of banking industry. Malaysia’s largest conventional banks are Maybank, CIMB, RHB, Public Bank, Hong Leong and AmBank. Here is a list of the major and popular banks in the country.
Maybank
Malayan Banking Bhd (or Maybank), based in Kuala Lumpur, is the largest bank in Malaysia by assets, deposits, loans, market capitalization, number of branches and employees. It offers a full array of banking products and services including personal and corporate accounts, home and auto loans, insurance, credit and debit cards, charge and prepaid cards, investment and SME banking, wealth management, online banking, foreign exchange and more. With 43,000 employees, it has over 2,400 retail branches across all ASEAN markets.
CIMB Group
CIMB Group Holdings is the second-largest banking group in Malaysia by assets. It is one of the leading ASEAN banks with a presence in 16 markets across Southeast Asia. It also has operations in China, India, Hong Kong, South Korea and the UK. CIMB Group has Baa1 long-term credit rating from Moody’s with a stable outlook. CIMB Investment Bank is rated A3 by Moody’s. CIMB Bank Berhad is rated A- by Standard & Poor's.
Public Bank Bhd
Located in Kuala Lumpur, Public Bank Berhad is the third largest bank in the country with a focus on retail customers and small and medium-sized enterprises. With over 19,000 employees, it has about 260 branches and 2,000 self-service terminals nationwide as well as branches in Hong Kong, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Laos. The company offers retail, corporate and investment banking, trustee and brokerage services, bancassurance, mobile and online banking, money transfers and more.
RHB Bank
RHB Bank Berhad is one of the leading banks in Malaysia with more than 14,400 employees. It operates through more than 210 domestic branches and 2,300 self-service terminals including ATMs, cash deposit machines (CDM), coin deposit machines, cheque deposit machines and cash recycler machines. It also has 19 branches abroad.
Hong Leong Bank
Hong Leong Bank (HLB), a subsidiary of Hong Leong Financial Group, is one of the top 5 financial institutions in the country. It operates through an extensive network of over 220 branches distributed across the nation. HLB was the first Malaysian bank to enter the Chinese banking sector. Hong Leong Bank's shares are listed on Bursa Malaysia with a market capitalization of US$9.7 billion as of December 5, 2024.
AmBank Group
AmBank Group provides personal, business and investment banking services, life and general insurance, family Takaful, stock and futures broking, asset management, REITs (real estate investment trusts) and other services. Founded in 1975 as Arab-Malaysian Development Bank, today it serves over 3 million clients. The distribution channels include over 170 branches, 764 automated teller machines (ATMs) and 11 regional offices.
UOB Malaysia
United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd is the largest foreign bank in the country, with a triple A rating from credit rating agency of Malaysia. Founded in 1993, it was merged with Lee Wah Bank to operate as a single entity. Today, it maintains 55 branches and offers a broad range of services including deposit products, bancassurance, credit cards, personal and business loans, investment banking, cash management, treasury and trade services, asset and ship finance, structured finance, payment services and much more. UOB Malaysia is a subsidiary of United Overseas Bank Limited, a Singaporean banking giant with offices in most Southeast Asian countries.
Bank Rakyat
Bank Rakyat (Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Berhad) is the leading Islamic cooperative bank. It was established in 1954 and operates an extensive network of around 150 branches and 990 ATMs, cash deposit machines and CICO terminals as well as 180 Ar-Rahnu XChange, a franchise which offers Islamic pawn broking services.
OCBC Bank (Malaysia)
OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad is one of the biggest foreign banks in the country by assets, deposits and loans. It provides high-quality customer services in the following areas: business and investment banking, retail banking, Islamic and transaction banking and treasury. OCBC Al-Amin offers unrivaled Islamic financial products to meet the needs of Muslims. OCBC Malaysia is a subsidiary of Singaporean Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp, the 2nd largest banking group in Southeast Asia and one of the most highly-rated banks in the world.
HSBC Bank Malaysia
HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad offers a broad suite of personal and commercial banking services including deposit and lending products, credit cards, mortgages, wealth management, investments, capital markets, foreign exchange and more. Currently, HSBC Malaysia has 54 branches and over 3,000 employees. HSBC Amanah Malaysia is the largest foreign Islamic bank in the country by number of branches.
