Cumberland Building Society

Cumberland Building Society, headquartered in Carlisle, Cumbria, is the tenth largest building society in the UK by assets. With around 480 employees (FTE) and 165,000 members, it offers a wide array of services for personal and business customers including residential, hospitality and commercial mortgages, savings accounts and cash ISAs, vehicle finance, home insurance, mobile app and other services. It is one of the few building societies offering current accounts, mobile and internet banking and Visa debit cards. The company maintains a branch network across Cumbria, West Northumberland, South West Scotland and North Lancashire. For the year ended 31 March 2024, Cumberland Building Society reported profit before tax of £9.6 million, customer loans (mortgage lending) of £2.6 billion, retail funding of £2.8 billion and total assets of £3.2 billion. The Cumberland was named the best mortgage provider for first-time buyers in the UK according to Moneyfacts in 2024. "As has been the case across our sector, we have seen a decline in the number of customers using our branches. The larger high street banks responded with closures, whereas we are the last financial institution in 16 locations throughout our region," said Des Moore, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cumberland Building Society.
