There are approximately 470 banks operating in Italy including public limited banks (SpA), cooperative (popolari) banks, mutual banks and subsidiaries of foreign banks. Banca d'Italia (or Bank of Italy) is the central bank of the country. Following is a list of the major and popular Italian banks.

Intesa Sanpaolo
Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. is the largest bank in Italy by assets, market capitalization, number of branches, ATMs and employees. It offers a broad array of services to retail, corporate and SME customers and high net worth individuals. With about 14 million clients in Italy, it operates a network of around 3,300 domestic branches and more than 900 branches and 19 representative offices abroad. Intesa Sanpaolo is the best bank in Italy according to Global Finance.
Unicredit
Unicredit Group is the second largest Italian bank. Headquartered in Milan, it serves over 15 million customers through about 3,100 branches including 1,950 retail branches in Italy as well as branches in Germany, Austria and CEE region. It also has offices in the United States, the UK, France, Switzerland, Spain, UAE, Japan and China, among others. In 2023, Unicredit's revenue and net profit were €23.8 billion and €9.5 billion, respectively. The company is rated Baa1 by Moody's and BBB by Standard & Poor’s and Fitch.
Cassa Depositi e Prestiti
Established in 1850, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) is an investment banking group and the national promotion institution headquartered in Rome. CDP is the third largest Italian bank by total assets. The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance is the principal shareholder of the company. 15.9% of CDP’s share capital is held by a group of banking foundations and 1.3% in treasury shares. Cassa Depositi e Prestiti is responsible for the Italian Postal savings which represent first source of its financial resources.
Banco BPM
Banco BPM S.p.A. is one of the top 5 banks in Italy with about 4 million customers, 1,800 branches and €190 billion in total assets. The bank’s branches are concentrated in Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont. It was formed through the merger of Italian cooperative banks Banco Popolare and Banca Popolare di Milano (BPM) in January 2017. The company is headquartered in Milan and Verona and employs about 21,000 people. As of November 30, 2024, BPM's market capitalization was nearly US$11 billion.
BCC Iccrea Group
BCC Iccrea Group is the largest cooperative banking group in Italy with approximately 2,500 branches, 120 mutual banks and presence in more than 1,700 Italian municipalities. The company was established in 1963 and today employs over 22,000 people.
BPER Banca
BPER Banca S.p.A. (formerly Banca Popolare dell'Emilia Romagna), based in Modena, is one of the large Italian banks. The Group's network includes over 1,800 branches located throughout Italian regions as well as office in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The company was created in 1983 from the merger of Banca Popolare di Modena and Banca Cooperativa di Bologna. In 1992, the Bank merged with Banca Popolare di Cesena. In 2019, BPER completed purchase of Banco di Sardegna (Bank of Sardinia).
Monte dei Paschi di Siena
Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena S.p.A. (BMPS) is one of the major Italian banks, with total assets of over €120 billion. It offers deposit and lending products, bancassurance, investment banking, online and mobile solutions, ATM services, credit cards and more. Ministry of Economy and Finance is the majority shareholder with 68% shares. Other large shareholder is Assicurazioni Generali. Established in 1472, Monte Paschi is the oldest bank in the world. In 2019, it sold its Belgian subsidiary to Warburg Pincus, an American private equity firm.
Banca Nazionale del Lavoro
Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL), headquartered in Rome, is one of the leading banking groups in Italy. It operates as a subsidiary of BNP Paribas, a French banking group. BNL offers savings products, personal and commercial loans, mortgages, debit and credit cards, insurance, leasing, factoring, cash management, international payments, investment banking, real estate brokerage, mobile and online banking, and more. The company was founded in 1913 and currently has approximately 1,000 branches across Italy.
Mediobanca
Mediobanca Banca di Credito Finanziario S.p.A. is an investment bank and one of the major consumer credit operators in Italy through Compass Banca. The main business activities are Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB), Consumer Banking, Wealth management and Principal Investing. Wealth management division includes Compagnie Monégasque de Banque, CheBanca!, Spafid, Private Banking, Cairn Capital, MB Asset Management and RAM Active Investments. Mediobanca has international branches in London, New York, Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt and Luxembourg.
BancoPosta
BancoPosta RFC, a subsidiary of Poste Italiane, provides current and savings accounts, debit cards, classic credit cards, insurance and investment products, mortgages, salary accounts, personal and auto loans, mobile and online banking, BancoPosta App, money transfers, prepaid cards and other financial services.
Credit Agricole Italia
Credit Agricole Italia SpA (formerly Crédit Agricole Cariparma), headquartered in Parma, is a member of France-based Crédit Agricole Group. The company operates through about 870 retail branches and 60 small business centers, and offers financial services in 11 Italian regions including Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Campania, Umbria, Lombardy, Tuscany, Veneto and Piedmont. Subsequent to acquisition of Cassa di Risparmio di Rimini, di Cesena and di San Miniato, the company serves over 2 million clients.
UBI Banca
Unione di Banche Italiane S.p.A. (UBI Banca) was one of the leading Italian banks with about 1,650 branches mainly in Calabria, Apulia, Basilicata, Campania, Marche, Liguria, Lombardy and Piedmont. The company's shares were traded on the Milan Stock Exchange (Borsa Italiana). In 2020, UBI Banca was taken over by Intesa Sanpaolo.
